-easily confused with Tubifex tubifex (Stimpson Klemm & Hiltunen 1982)

-one of the most common tubificinae in North America (Stimpson Klemm & Hiltunen 1982)

-can occur in tidal and freshwater areas (brinkhurst & Cook 1980); tolerates salinities from 0-7.5 ppt (Chapman & Brinhurst 1979 in Brinkhurst & Cook 1980)

-in unpolluted reaches of streams and lakes on sand or mud with sparce vegetation (Dumnicka 1878 in Davis 1982) as well as on algae covered gravel in eutrophic streams with moderate organic pollution (Davis 1982)
